Omega-3s are a group of essential fatty acids that play a major role in heart, brain, metabolic, and immune health. “Essential” means your body can’t make them, so you have to get them from food or supplements. Omega-3s are foundational nutrients for cardiovascular and metabolic health, especially in people with inflammation, insulin resistance, or elevated triglycerides.

The 3 Main Types of Omega-3s

EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid)

  • Found in fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel)

  • Strong anti-inflammatory effects

  • Supports heart health, triglyceride reduction, and vascular function

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid)

  • Also found in fatty fish and algae

  • Critical for brain, eye, and nervous system health

  • Supports heart rhythm and blood vessel integrity

ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid)

  • Found in plant foods (flax, chia, walnuts)

  • Must be converted to EPA/DHA (conversion is limited)

Food Sources
