The Skin You’re In: Why Radiant Skin Is More Than a Beauty Routine

September is National Skin Care Month, which makes it the perfect time to rethink what “skincare” really means.

We often approach our skin from the outside in: cleanser, serum, moisturizer, makeup, maybe a little concealer to hide the evidence of another sleepless night.

But what if we turned that around?

What if beautiful skin wasn't simply about what we put on our skin, but also about what we put into our bodies?

Your skin is your body's largest organ. It is living, breathing tissue that interacts with your environment and reflects many aspects of your overall well-being.

And after decades of working with women and helping them transform the way they see themselves, I've come to believe something important:

“Radiant beauty isn't created in the makeup mirror. It's cultivated through the way we nourish, protect and care for the woman underneath it.”

Beauty Starts with a Better Question

Instead of asking, “What product will make me look younger?”

Perhaps we should be asking:

“What does my skin need from me right now?”

That question changes everything.

Maybe your skin needs hydration.

Maybe it needs more nourishing foods.

Maybe it needs better sleep.

Maybe it needs protection from the sun.

Maybe it needs less stress.

Maybe it needs a simpler skincare routine and a closer look at the ingredients you're using every day.

Or maybe it needs all of the above.

The beautiful thing about approaching skincare through a wellness lens is that we stop treating our skin as something separate from the rest of us.

Your skin is part of your body.

And your body deserves to be nourished as a whole.

What’s really in your Beauty Cabinet?

Here's a challenge for September:

Go into your bathroom and pick up the products you use every single day.

Your cleanser.
Your moisturizer.
Your serum.
Your foundation.
Your sunscreen.
Your shampoo.
Your body lotion.

Now turn the bottles around.

Do you know what you're putting on your skin?

You don't need to become a chemist overnight, and you certainly don't need to panic or throw everything away. But becoming an educated consumer is a beautiful form of self-care.

Look beyond words like natural, clean, botanical, or anti-aging. Those marketing terms don't tell the whole story.

Read the ingredient list.

Pay attention to products that irritate your skin.

Consider how many products you are layering on your body every day.

And when you have questions about a particular ingredient or skin concern, ask a qualified healthcare professional or dermatologist.

The goal isn't fear.

The goal is awareness.

Your Skin Needs to Eat, too

One of the most overlooked aspects of skincare is nutrition.

Your skin needs nutrients to support its structure, barrier function and normal repair processes.

That doesn't mean there's one magical “beauty food.” It means that the cumulative effect of nourishing your body well can become part of your beauty routine.

Think:

Protein
The building blocks your body needs to maintain tissues and support healthy skin structure.

Colorful fruits and vegetables
A rainbow on your plate provides a variety of vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds.

Healthy fats
Foods such as fatty fish, nuts, seeds and avocados provide fats that support overall health.

Vitamin C-rich foods
Citrus, berries, kiwi, bell peppers and broccoli are delicious ways to include vitamin C, which plays an important role in collagen formation.

Water
Sometimes the most beautiful thing you can give your body is simply enough hydration.

And here's the part I love most:

You don't need a complicated diet to nourish your skin. You need consistency.

5 Skin-Nourishing Foods to Put on Your Plate

01 — Wild-Caught Salmon

Rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, salmon is a delicious addition to a skin-supportive, nutrient-dense diet.

02 — Berries

Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries provide vitamin C and a variety of antioxidant compounds.

03 — Avocado

A source of healthy unsaturated fats and vitamin E, avocado makes an easy addition to salads, eggs or whole-grain toast.

04 — Bell Peppers

Especially red and yellow peppers, which provide vitamin C and add beautiful color and crunch to your meals.

05 — Walnuts & Seeds

Walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds provide healthy fats and plant-based nutrients that can complement a balanced diet.

Beauty Tip: Don't look for one “superfood.” Build a super plate:

Protein + Colorful Plants + Healthy Fats + Hydration

The Four Beauty Habits That Have Nothing to Do with Beauty Products

If you want to support healthy-looking skin, don't stop with your skincare cabinet.

Look at your lifestyle.

SLEEP

Your body does some of its most important restorative work while you sleep. Make quality rest part of your beauty routine.

STRESS

Your skin doesn't exist in isolation from your nervous system. Finding healthy ways to manage stress is part of whole-body wellness.

MOVEMENT

Regular physical activity supports circulation, metabolic health and vitality, and those benefits extend far beyond your skin.

SUN PROTECTION

We can embrace getting older while still protecting our skin. Make sun protection part of your everyday routine and talk with your dermatologist or healthcare professional about what is right for you.

Maybe We Need to Rethink “Anti-Aging”

This one is personal for me.

At 70, I have no desire to spend my life fighting my age.

I want to live it beautifully.

There is a difference.

I don't want to erase every line that tells the story of where I've been.

I want to be vibrant.

Strong.

Healthy.

Radiant.

Present.

And fully alive in this season of my life.

I believe there's something incredibly beautiful about a woman who isn't trying to become someone else.

She's simply becoming more fully herself.

That's the kind of beauty I'm interested in.

Not chasing youth.

Cultivating vitality.

Not hiding our years.

Wearing them beautifully.

Not asking, “How can I look younger?”

But asking:

“How can I feel more alive?”

Your September Skin-Wellness Reset

This month, give yourself a little beauty audit.

Look at your products.
What are you using every day?

Look at your plate.
Are you nourishing your body with enough protein, colorful produce and healthy fats?

Look at your water glass.
Are you staying hydrated?

Look at your lifestyle.
How are you sleeping, moving and managing stress?

Look in the mirror.

And instead of looking for what's wrong, ask yourself:

“How can I take even better care of this woman?”

Because skincare isn't vanity.

It's stewardship.

Your skin is part of your wellness.

Your wellness is part of your beauty.

And your beauty is part of your story.

So this September, let's celebrate more than skincare.

Let's celebrate skin health, whole-body wellness and the woman we're becoming.

Because the goal isn't to turn back time.

The goal is to live beautifully in the time we've been given.

And that is beauty from the inside out.
